Caddo Lake State Park

June 17, Monday Morning

FIRST OF ALL, HOPE ALL OF YOU HAD A GREAT FATHER’S DAY.  I am lucky to have a great step-Dad, and have such great memories of my Dad.

We had a nice day yesterday.  I got up earlier than Chloe.  She had done such a good job of getting everything ready to go, that all I had to do was disconnect the AC and pull in the Kitchen slide.  We were off.  We needed a few groceries, so our first stop was Walmart.  That was the first grocery store place we found.  I got everything on my list except beer and wine, cause it wasn’t noon yet.  Texas law prevents sales on Sunday without a meal before noon,  Oh well, maybe later.

Our next stop was a McDonalds to get breakfast and return some Red Box videos Angie had rented for Chloe.  Got breakfast, but no Red Box there. It was 9:30 am, so we decided to look some up on the internet.  Went to the address shown, and it was a Title Company.  If they had one, it was hidden inside.  Moving on….. we decided to fill up with gas while Chloe looked up a different Red Box.  We found the cheapest gas at a grocery chain, Brookshire’s.  Since they were shown at other locations as having an inside Red Box, I made Chloe go in.  Again, no Red Box.  We went to the address for the Brookshire’s, and they did indeed have one inside.  They also happened to be next door to a Taco Bueno.  Chloe was hungry.  I mean, it had been at least 20 minutes since she’d eaten her hotcakes and sausage.  I agreed to go to Taco Bueno, but while driving thru the parking lot, she saw a Shipley’s Donuts.  She’d changed her mind.  Fine with me.  Off we go.  About thirty minutes later, she had her donut, and I had a cinnamon twist.

We enjoyed the drive, but as we approached Kilgore, she saw another sign for Taco Bueno.  It was out of our way, but what difference does it make?  Off we go.  Unfortunately, about 100 yards before the Taco Bueno, we saw a Mazzio’s pizza.  She decided she wanted that instead.  We went in and got her a “personal size” pizza to go.  While she munched on that, I realized it was now noon, so I stopped at a  grocery-gas station.  No wine, but I did buy Corona beer and ice.  We were finally ready to camp!

We arrive at our destination Caddo Lake State Park, and the ranger checks us in.  I was advised that they were completely full,  and my spot hadn’t been vacated yet…. They guy had 20 minutes left.  No big deal.  We head out, but one little lady behind the desk softly says “If you can’t pull into that spot, 22 is available.”  Huh?  I am wondering what is wrong with her…. The guy will leave in a few minutes.  We decided to drive by it anyway…. It is an ugly spot, and right next to the camp host who has everything he owns set up outside his cab-over camper that is sitting on blocks.  Ugh… nasty view.  We race back to the ranger station and I smile and say…. I am afraid to use that spot, it’s too narrow and I’m afraid I’ll hit a tree.  The little old lady just smiles sweetly and says, I didn’t figure you could drive thru without hitting something.  Well, I got the primo spot…. #22.  It’s huge, and on the end.  Honestly, the trees were no problem, but if they think a woman can’t drive thru…. Who cares.  Let them think it.

I then took Chloe on a tour of the park,  She loves it, but says she’s going to call Papa and ask him to buy a boat and bring it down so she can ride and fish.  Know what’s sad?  She probably believes he’ll do it.  Know what’s pathetic?  I’m not sure he won’t.  I met the ladies across the road.  I have my antennae set up, and they couldn’t figure out what it was, so they came over to find out.  They were impressed.  One was even more of a talker than me, and she stayed quite a bit.  Chloe beat me in two games of Hand and Foot.  That girl can draw more doubles than anyone I’ve ever seen.  We went to bed about midnight.

Tuesday

Right now, it’s 8am, and she’s still sleeping,  I think I’ll go in and start breakfast, which should wake her up.  She has planned on going out in canoes or kayaks today.  We’ll see how things work out.

Well, so much for well laid plans.  We decided to go on a boat ride today.  We also decided to eat breakfast out.  Off we go to Uncertain, TX.  Yes, they have boat rides available.  We were discussing prices when it started pouring down rain.  Do you go out in rain, I ask.  Nope.  Just come back tomorrow.  Well, so much for that.  We went looking for a place to eat.  We tried 4 different locations, and none of them are open on Mondays or Tuesdays.  I’m not sure what’s up with that, but we finally decided to eat cereal.  Did that, then came home, and it was once again beautiful.  We decided on a bike ride.  We did that, and took some great pictures.  If it’s raining tomorrow, we’re going to paint something in oils.

I made Chloe a snack of “Frito Chili Pie” in the afternoon, then tacos for dinner.  That girl sure can put away the food.  Then, she made 1 minute brownies.  I think she’s finally tired.  She does have energy.  She is quite the texting teen now.  I know there is probably a boy involved, but whatever.  She is a teenager.    She also called Gary and told him to buy a boat and bring it down.  Not sure she’ll get her way on that one…. She better not.  However, she wants Gary to come down and enjoy this place with us.  She thinks he’d love it.  He’ll probably come down Wed or Thurs.  She has given him a list of things to bring.  We’ll see how it unfolds.  Right now, I’m pooped and going to bed.  She had great plans for tomorrow.

Tuesday

So much for the best laid plans.  It is raining.  I expect to see Noah and his crew floating by any second.  It probably isn’t raining as much as it seems like, but the RV does tend to magnify sounds.  We WERE going to go for a boat ride, but she did have alternate plans…. Painting, should it rain.  Well, raining it is!  Out comes all the stuff.  We had taken quite a few pictures of scenes we’d like to paint.  We both wanted to paint Hell’s Half Acre, the name of a canoe trail on the bayou.  We had breakfast first, and that took quite a while to fill Chloe up.  Man…. She can eat me under the table.  How does she stay so thin?  Oh yeah, I’m old and past menopause.  Ah…….. I remember… never mind.  Too long ago to get the facts straight.

We worked at a fairly good clip.  Come 4 or 5 pm, we have to stop.  Her painting is beginning to get too wet.  (Joyce will know what I mean)  Not mine, I’m too stingy with the paint.  However, the girl is starving.  I make her a snack of beef nachos, no cheese, no jalapenos…. I know…. Why does she call them nachos?  Then, we decide to enjoy the brief respite from the rain.  Off we go on our bikes.  We both attempt to make it up one road that is like STRAIGHT up hill, and I actually went up further than she did before I ran out of steam.  I wonder if the 21 speeds had anything to do with it?  NAW!  She has a regular old fashioned Huffy bike, exactly like one she saw in a movie.  Anyway…. Her bike has fenders, mine doesn’t.  She took a picture of me.  Gawd…. I’ll get even with her yet.  She didn’t understand that when you have no fender, tire spray gets you.  To make matters worse… she took a short cut thru the woods, which I wouldn’t do.  I guess I rode about 2 miles, then walked the last ¼ mile or so…… only because I had a flat.  Wow… what a day I was having.

I managed to cook smoked sausage, 8 chicken tenders, 2 ears of corn, salad and green beans for dinner.  I ate half the smoked sausage, she the other half, I had one chicken tender, she ate 6…… I am amazed.  I thought only teen boys ate that way.  Anyway…. She also had cookies for dessert.  She decided not to make her famous 1 minute brownies.  We then spent the evening watching The Voice… boo hoo…. I wanted the Swon Brothers to win.  Not that they were the best singers, but I liked their personality.  If I had wanted the best singer to win, it would have been Sasha, who was booted off last week.  Then, it was Hand and Foot time.  We played our fourth game since arriving.  She beat me every game, until last night.  I FINALLY WON!  She is so used to winning, she was pretty much depressed about it.  Kept trying to figure out what she could have done differently.  At least I don’t brag when I beat the crap out of her.

Finally… bed time.

Wednesday

We hit the sack around 11 pm last night, and when I got up for the 5th time to put air in the air mattress, I noticed her TV was still on.  It was like 3am, so I turned it off.  Note to self….. GET BACK UP MATTRESS OUT AND REPLACE THE CURRENT ONE!  I had a terrible night.  I will probably not mess with trying to find the air leak… if Gary wants to, then he can.  If not, I’ll just replace it.  Sure makes for a long night, that’s for sure.

It is a misty morning, or foggy….whatever.  If it clears up, we’ll do the boat ride.  If not, we’re painting again.   Another chance to make a beautiful memory with Chloe.

Later…..
