Today is one of those days. See, my household is besieged by one person with MSHHUAS. It's not a new disease, every household probably has an individual with it. In this house, my husband has it. It is a chronic disease. As far as I know, there is no known cure. If you are not familiar with the term (some people live with someone that has it, unaware that it has an acronym associated with it), MSHHUAS stands for MY SPOUSE HAS HEAD UP ASS SYNDROME. My spouse has a very acute attack going on right now.
At our age in life, for birthdays and other gift holidays, we only want what we want. Hell, we'd be happy if we wanted what we have, but that's a different disease. Instead of me buying him crap I want (it's a cool way to have access to something you want), he prefers to just buy what he wants, then he has me wrap it. So, for Christmas, "Santa" brought Gary a new PC. He spent about $1,000 on it. He bought a work horse with Windows 8. Did he buy a new keyboard? Yes. Did he buy a new monitor? No! Everyone (except Gary, I guess) knows that it was built to use a touch screen. It will work with an older monitor, but crap, Gary has it connected to a 15 year old monitor. Hey, it is a tube type monitor.
I have a monitor I purchased last year that is digital, and it's also a TV monitor. It's in the guest room. He used it once on the PC, but Morgan threw a fit because it had "always" been in the guest room, and that's where she likes to watch TV. So, he returned it, and will not use it. Don't even go there.
Well, today, his MSHHUAS kicked in. He decided to use his new PC Christmas present. He had never been online with it. To be safe, he decided to call McAfee and purchase an online download of their anti-virus software. They were with him online, and guess what. They "discovered" that his PC has been hacked 3 times. They said that it already has software downloaded on it that will track everything done, so the hackers could monitor his passwords, etc. I had been to the gym and came home while he was talking to them. Thank Gawd I did. They told him they would "fix" the breach for $199, then he could install the software he was attempting to purchase. I told him it's a scam. I mean, crap, he never had the damned thing plugged in. He canceled the call, and I explained my experience.
I experienced the same thing the last time I attempted to purchase antivirus software, and called Angie while I was on line with the sales group. She came over and took over the call. She disconnected their connection to the PC, erased the crap they'd added, and set me up with AVG free software. I haven't had problems since. Thank goodness I called her. We also got a refund on the software I purchased BEFORE I realized they were after more money to install it.
I explained this all to Gary, and he was upset that after McAfee sales people has help him, his password had been changed. Long story short, he's the one that created it, and it was so long ago he'd forgotten. I did call Angie, and she's working, so she can't come over today, but she said she'd come over tomorrow and fix everything. I just wish she could fix Gary's MSHHUAS. I tried to tell him how to disconnect it from the network, but would he listen? No. First, I said to unplug the Ethernet connection. He told me it wasn't connected with one, it was connected via wi-fi. Could I figure out how to locate a wireless connection on his PC? No. I finally got pissed, I mean agitated, and left.
Gary comes in 20 minutes later and says he's gotten it off the internet. How? Well, see, he did plug in the Ethernet connection, but never told the PC to activate it. He "presumed" he was using wi-fi. He has since unplugged it, and it's working. Well, not the PC, but at least it is no longer connected to the Internet. I asked if he'd ever programmed the PC the password and connection info for the wi-fi, and no he hadn't. How did he think it would know to use it? Oh, never mind. You see where I'm going. It is very difficult to work with someone who can't remember that they are the ones that built the PC user id and password (he thought McAfee or I had done it), and can't remember plugging in the Ethernet connection.
I've got to quit writing about this. It's just one of those days!
