We made a few pit stops, and ate in Dalhart at a Steak
House, which was fairly decent. We were
almost here, when we saw 2 baby black bears cross the road. The speed limit is 45 thru that area (nothing
but mountains and animals but very curvy) so us almost hitting them was never a
chance. It was so cool. I’ve seen lots of deer, moose, etc., but
never a baby bear up close. We arrived
and got checked in around 11:30 Dallas time.
They still don’t offer phones in the rooms, and no air conditioning, but
it was around 65 degrees when we arrived.
We slept with the window open, and at least they have screens. The blankets did come in handy.
Again, I had trouble sleeping… don’t know what’s up with that. So, I got up at 5am and took a shower. I have no wi-fi yet, so I’m typing this into word, and I’ll upload this when we get some service. Service is really poor here with AT&T. You can have 4g service, and still not have internet on your cell phone. Sprint or Verizon are better in Colorado. If you’re in a metro area, it’s fine, but the state doesn’t want their vista’s cluttered with Cell Towers. I did find that periodically I could receive something on my email, and my phone would beep, so I had passed a tower briefly, but never enough to do much. I’ll try and catch up today.

We are planning on going hiking at Cordova Pass this morning
after breakfast. I just hope I can find
my shoes. Sandals just won’t cut
it. After that, we’ll come back here and
eat at the Dog Inn, and then we’re headed for Gunnison. Of course, that’s just the plan, who knows
what will happen. Later, and hopefully
I’ll get some beautiful pictures to post.
Saturday evening,,,,
So much for plans. We
ended up looking for a place to stay her for 3 nights. We rented a condo about 1 ½ mile from the Dog
Bar & Grill. It has 2 bedrooms….. I
have one and Angie and the girls have the other. We then spent the day in LaVeta
shopping. We only got enough supplies
for 2 days. We have two decks. We ended up setting this place up, unloading
the car, then we headed in to town to eat at Dog Bar & Grill. After dinner, I went to the meat place, and
they have 2 types of mean….. elk and bison….. nope, I wanted chicken. He finally got in the “last resort sales” and
sold me ground beef. They sell more of
it than anything, he just doesn’t advertise it.
While I was there, the girls all played miniature golf. Then we came home. They walked the trail head for 1.5 miles, and
I worked on pictures and looking for a place in Gunnison. I think I found a place…. But an evening storm
passed thru and knocked out all power, so I have no wi-fi. Guess I’ll quit for now…. I have to save my
PC battery.
The electricity came on finally, and Angie rebooted the router here at the condo. Weird to be able to blog, but we can't use our iphone for anything except internet. Danged AT&T. Morgan and Angie are in watching The Goonies, for the 10 time, Chloe is again reading, and I'm in my bedroom. I am pooped. I think I need a bit of time to adjust to the altitude.
Here are a few pictures.

Morgan is whittling something
We are definitely going hiking tomorrow. We are risking our lives..... they are having lots of bear activity. They had a bear roaming the halls of the Cuchara Inn earlier in the week. They now keep all doors closed at night. They actually used to keep the back doors proped open with rocks. It's a small town. The girls now have bear bells. You wrap them on your ankles, and you jingle as you walk. Ohhhhhhhh the excitement. Later....
