A Day in the Life of a Pissed Off Dieter

Today I started our in a hurry and thank goodness this day is over.  I got up and drank coffee and read the paper with Gary, then we went for our walk.  Today, we walked 3.9 miles in 73 minutes.  That's not too bad considering Stella was with us.  By the way.  Gary showed me the "original" cemetery.  I have to go check it out, but we didn't have time today.  I needed to go home and eat, shower, get dressed and be at the golf course at 11:30 to meet with Don.  We didn't finish our walk until 10:15, so I was in a hurry.

Met with Don.  Sheila came in and we three and Matt figured out what needs to be done with the Couples Tournaments that Don wants me to run.  Nothing in it free for me, so whatever.  I do like Don, so I'm gonna do it.  Am I dumb or what.  Sheila will do the emails and web work required.

After that, Sheila and I went and practiced our short chip shots.  We went to the Old Course to do it.  We both chipped for maybe 30 mins. to an hour.  My back was hurting, so we decided to play a game.  We each got 3 balls, and created a game where the first person to win 3 rounds won the game.  A round consisted of chipping closest to a particular hole.  Sorry.... the practice green has about 7 different cups you can hit into.  Since we're both trying to get healthy, instead of betting a beer, we bet an iced tea.  Yeah, sort of lame, isn't it.

Sheila was up first, so she selected our target hole, and led the way with her first shot.  Then I followed with my first shot, etc. till we had each hit our three balls towards the target hole.  I think Sheila won the first set.  I don't remember how it went for the other sets, but I think I won one. Sheila then won the next two, so she won the contest.  Then, we did the same thing with putting.  We took turns selecting the hole and spot where we'd both shoot from.  I ended up winning that game.  Then we had to create a final tie breaker game.  We came up with having to chip on, then put out.  We took turns just like before.  Once we had all of our balls chipped on, then we each selected our best ball, and putted from there.  We both made our putts, so we tied and had to do it again.  We picked a new location.... on a really steep slope.  We both chipped on.  I was even with the hole, but further away.  I putted uphill, and then the ball rolled back down into the hole.  It was a fantastic read and execution.  Well, maybe more luck, but she didn't make her put.  She will NEVER hear the end of this.

Margie saw us practicing and came over to say hi.  She had played with the seniors, then was on her way home when she saw us.  She was so excited that Sheila was practicing.  She and Sheila are in a really big tournament.  They have a lot of pressure on them, cause their team usually comes in first place in their flight.

After that, Sheila and I went and hit range balls.  Oh, she had to stop at the snack bar and buy us iced tea.  SHEILA HAD TO PAY CAUSE I BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HER IN OUR LITTLE CONTEST !
You know, Sheila is my favorite person, and here I am, not really being that nice to her.  All this, after she gave me some good news today.  I told her how after dieting and walking for two frigging weeks, I'd lost a grand total of one pound.  I am soooo disappointed.  She informed me that she weighed when she got home from Vegas, and she wanted me to know she had gained one pound.  ONE POUND!  YES ! I suspected as much.  I thought her face looked a little fuller.

Anyway.... she hit several balls, and I hit a few.  My back was hurting something awful, so I just sat and watched.  Anyway, we both head for the house.  As I was getting ready to leave the driveway of the course and turn onto the city street, I tried to find my phone.  No could do.  Sheila was behind me, so I ran back and asked her to call it.  Nope.... couldn't find it.  I decided it was at the Bridges, and I headed back there.

Got there, and they said they'd given it to Matt cause he knew my brother.  Well, that's great, I don't have a brother.  Found him, and no one gave it to him.  He said Whitney had it.  Matt and I went in there, and she did have it.  I said something like thanks, I was so worried about it.  She said "Sheila called".  I thought, why would Sheila call when she knew I was coming over to look for it.  Got in the car, looked at the phone, and it showed a call from Sheila.  I "think" when I had Sheila call it, Whitney saw the display, and that was the call from Sheila she was referring to.  Weird.  Anyway, I called and left a message for Sheila that I found the phone.

I came home, and Chloe came over for something to eat.  She's been home sick with strep.  Angie is on a diet, and they're all eating healthy because of it.  I cooked Chloe some canned chili, and she made herself some mini frito chili pies.  Angie lost 8 pounds on her diet last week, and like 4 already this week.  I was whining about all the dieting, etc., and my big loss of one friggin pound.  She said let me look at your records.  (I have an iPhone app that counts calories, carbs, exercise, etc.  It works like facebook.)  i added her as my friend, and she noticed that I'm only taking 1/2 the recommended protein when I make my diet shakes.  I said that's because I was saving them for food.  She said there's not taste in 1/2.  I said the scoop is huge.  She said, no it's not.  We argue back and forth, and she insists I show her the scoop.  Ok, I do.

On the left, a tablespoon.  On the right, the scoop that is included in the protein powder.

The picture is hard to read, but it gives two serving sizes.  1 scoop (37g) and 2 scoops (74g) .  Okay, you can multiply 37 times 2 and get 74.... even I can.  But check out the calories.  One scoop has 140 calories, and two scoops have 270 calories.  Okay, I was confused there, but what's 10 little calories difference, right?  Angie says, but Mom, you said you were using half.  Yes, I reply.   Well, she says, it's obvious that the scoop in the box is NOT 37g.  I am not following her.  Remember, I am American.  The rest of the world may be on the metric system, but we couldn't get the grasp of it, so we're still metric.  I do NOT use grams, kilometers, Celsius, etc..  I use tablespoons and miles and Fahrenheit.  I had measured the crap, and found that 4 tablespoons is just a tad more than the scoop, so I've been using two scant tablespoons to get what I thought was half for 70 calories. .

We get on the internet, and sure enough, the numbers don't add up.  I held the supplied scoop up to the light, and voila!  It has 70 cc. in the fine print on the bottom of the scoop.  Now, I'm really confused.  Further research on the internet shows that 1g = 1cc.  Hence, the supplied scoop is actually 74g, which means I've been using double what I thought I was taking.  I was livid.  I convinced myself that that is the reason for my lack of weight loss.  I tried calling the friggin company, but they're based in New York, and they were closed.  I will call them tomorrow.  I maybe should be like the woman that sued Nutella and won a million dollars cause they advertise it as healthy.  They didn't have the wrong info on the jar, they just advertised it as healthy.  She won her million, and like three more million for the rest of us that bought it and no receipt is required to make a claim.  Hmmmm.

Ok, so moving on.  My neighbor is going to Hilton Head for a week and wants us to feed her cats.  We agree, so she comes down to bring the cat food.  (They're wild outdoor feral cats she just feeds.)  While here, she sees the protein powder sitting out.  She asks about it, and I have to explain to her why I'm dieting, that yes I am exercising, etc.  Not because I want to brag, or even want her to know, but because she is a dietitian.  Maybe more than that.  She carries a doctor of some type on her business card.  Anyway, she is always trying to put me on some organic herbs and crap to cure whatever I have.  Long story.  Anyway, she is reading the package to make sure I'm doing it right, and I happen to mention the scoop size is wrong.  She had to check it for herself, and she agreed with me.  She said she is trying to get some company to change their package because they show their pita pockets as having 80 calories, and they really have 160.  I asked her how that could happen, and she says it is by weight.  Evidently some of their pita pockets in every package are like me.... fat.  Anyway, she insisted I get a kitchen scale.  I have one.... it's not good enough.  Like I'm gonna weigh something that is measure in g's and comes with a scoop..... whatever.  Long story short (this is short????), the FDA doesn't inspect what is on the packages.  If you report it to them, they're too busy doing mad cow disease checks or something else.

Gawd, I have driven myself crazy with this diet shit today.  I'm closing and changing my diet plan as of tomorrow.  One thing Gay (my cat neighbor) did say, as did Angie.  I am not consuming enough calories.  My body thinks it's starving, and it has probably slowed my metabolism down.  Crap, I'm quitting for the night.  As soon as I hit publish, I'm off to the kitchen for a chocolate bar.  Yup.... tomorrow is a new day!
